Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how PlainBetter handles personal information when you use plainbetter.co.uk. PlainBetter is currently an independent UK-based project in an early testing stage.

1. Information we process

Account information

If you create an account, we process your email address, account identifier and authentication/session information. Authentication is provided by Supabase. PlainBetter does not receive or store your password in plain text.

Language-learning information

For logged-in users, we may store learning information such as your language, vocabulary lemmas, successful-use counts, successful Hardcore-test recalls and recorded chat-practice time.

Conversation content

When you use Chat or Generate Example Response, the text needed to provide the feature is sent to the PlainBetter backend and to OpenAI's API so a response can be generated. PlainBetter does not currently save full chat transcripts to your account database.

Recent Conversations on your device

If you choose to allow Recent Conversations, PlainBetter stores recent chat content in your browser's local storage. This is currently limited to 20 conversations and approximately 30 days. You can refuse or later withdraw this choice through Privacy choices in the footer.

Technical and security information

Our hosting, authentication, email and infrastructure providers may process technical information such as IP address, timestamps, request information, device/browser information and security logs as part of operating and protecting their services.

2. Why we use this information

We use personal information where it is needed to provide features you request, maintain your account and learning history, operate and secure the service, troubleshoot problems, prevent abuse, and communicate with you about authentication or account matters.

Where the law requires consent for optional storage on your device, such as the current Recent Conversations feature, we rely on your consent. You can withdraw that consent at any time.

3. Browser storage

PlainBetter uses essential browser storage for functions such as remembering authentication/session state when you choose to sign in and remembering your privacy choice. Optional Recent Conversations storage is disabled unless you allow it.

PlainBetter does not currently use advertising or behavioural-tracking storage technologies on the site.

4. Service providers

PlainBetter currently uses the following service providers:

• Supabase — authentication and database services.
• OpenAI — generation and analysis of language-learning conversations through the API.
• Render — backend hosting.
• Cloudflare — domain, DNS, frontend hosting and email routing.
• Resend — delivery of authentication-related email.

5. International processing

Some service providers operate internationally, so personal information may be processed outside the UK. Where applicable, transfers are handled using safeguards and contractual arrangements made available by those providers and required by data-protection law.

6. How long we keep information

• Optional Recent Conversations stored on your device are limited to approximately 30 days and 20 conversations.
• Account, vocabulary and learning-stat information is generally kept while your account remains active, unless you ask us to delete it or limited retention is reasonably required for legal, security or operational reasons.
• Infrastructure and provider logs may have separate retention periods set by the relevant provider.

7. Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights including access, correction, deletion, restriction, objection, data portability and withdrawal of consent.

8. Sensitive information

Please avoid putting unnecessary sensitive personal information, confidential information, or personal information about other people into your chat messages or custom scenarios.

9. Adults during the current beta

PlainBetter is currently intended for adults aged 18 or over during this early testing stage.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as PlainBetter develops, particularly if we add new storage, analytics, advertising, payment or account-history features.

Terms of Use

These Terms of Use apply when you use PlainBetter at plainbetter.co.uk. PlainBetter is currently an early-stage language-learning service offered for testing and development.

1. Who may use PlainBetter

During the current beta stage, PlainBetter is intended for users aged 18 or over. By using the service, you agree to use it lawfully and in accordance with these terms.

2. Accounts

You may be able to use some features without an account. If you create an account, you are responsible for providing accurate account information, keeping your login details secure and promptly telling us if you believe your account has been compromised.

3. Language-learning content and AI

PlainBetter uses artificial intelligence and dictionary data to provide conversations, corrections, examples, definitions and learning suggestions. These outputs can be incomplete, inaccurate, unnatural or wrong. You should treat them as learning assistance rather than a guarantee of linguistic accuracy.

4. Acceptable use

You must not use PlainBetter to:

• break the law or encourage unlawful activity;
• harass, threaten or abuse other people;
• submit material that infringes another person's rights;
• attempt to interfere with, attack, scrape, reverse engineer or bypass technical limits or security controls;
• use automated methods to create unreasonable load or excessive API usage; or
• submit confidential or sensitive personal information that is not reasonably needed for language practice.

5. Your content

You keep ownership of content you submit to PlainBetter. You give us permission to process that content only as reasonably necessary to provide, secure and operate the service, including sending relevant conversation content to service providers used to generate responses.

6. PlainBetter content and intellectual property

The PlainBetter name, site design, software and original service content belong to PlainBetter or its licensors, except where third-party content or open-licensed dictionary material is identified separately.

7. Availability and changes

PlainBetter is currently a beta service. Features may change, be limited, stop working or be removed. We may suspend or discontinue parts of the service, including to maintain security, manage costs or improve the product.

8. No paid plan under these beta terms

PlainBetter does not currently offer a paid consumer plan under these terms. If paid subscriptions, credits, advertising-based unlocks or other paid features are introduced, the relevant price, billing, cancellation and consumer information will be presented before purchase and these terms will be updated where necessary.

9. Liability

Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded. Subject to that, PlainBetter is provided on an early-stage basis and we do not promise that it will always be available, error-free or suitable for every learning purpose.

10. Privacy

Our Privacy Policy explains how personal information is handled.

11. Ending access

You may stop using PlainBetter at any time. We may restrict or suspend access where reasonably necessary for security, abuse prevention, legal compliance or serious breach of these terms.

12. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, subject to any mandatory consumer protections that apply to you.
